David Blakey, who led the drive from 1991 till his retirement in 1999, handed away on June 11 on the age of 82.

A West Mercia Police spokesperson mentioned: “Our ideas and condolences are along with his household and pals.”

Mr Blakey started his policing profession with Durham County Constabulary in 1960 and served 35 years throughout quite a lot of forces.

He took on senior roles in Northumbria, Leicestershire, and West Mercia, the place he returned as chief constable earlier than retiring in February 1999.

Following his retirement, he served as an inspector with Her Majesty’s Inspectorate of Constabulary from 1999 to 2004 and held the title of Deputy Lieutenant of Worcestershire from 1999 to 2018.

He was awarded the Queen’s Police Medal in 1993 and made a CBE in 1998.
